The second-generation, family-owned precision tooling company this week received approval for technical review by the Hempfield Township Planning Commission to add 12,500-square-feet to its facility at 1172 Garden St., making room for 20 new manufacturing positions.

Company officials were not immediately available for comment.

General Carbide produces tungsten carbide tooling for the gas and automotive industries and petrochemical manufacturing and pulp and paper production.

A $14 million expansion was announced in December, just months after the company celebrated its 50th anniversary. The 60,000-square-foot expansion will bring 100 new jobs over the next 17 months.

Days after the news was released, the company announced a partnership with the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering, where student fellows and a Pitt assistant professor will explore possible uses for tungsten carbide powders in 3D printing. Professor Markus Chmielus said the goal is to identify processes to use tungsten carbide in additive manufacturing.
